The Inside Story

Teenage Rape Victim Dies After Battling Injuries in Beed, Maharashtra

A 17-year-old girl who set herself on fire after being allegedly raped by her father's former employer died in a hospital in Beed, Maharashtra, on Saturday after fighting for her life for over a week. The victim's father worked at a farm owned by the prime accused, Babulal Rasal, who had borrowed money from him. Rasal, a former deputy sarpanch of Churmapuri village, is considered close to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

On April 4, Rasal and his accomplice Narayan Kale abducted the girl and allegedly raped her for a week, taking her to lodges in various cities, according to the police. On April 10, the accused dropped the girl at her village, where she did not reveal anything about the incident to her family members. However, on the same day, she attempted suicide by pouring kerosene on herself and setting herself ablaze. She suffered 95% burn injuries and was admitted to the hospital.

The news of the girl's death created tension in various parts of the district, although no untoward incidents were reported. Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe had earlier visited the victim and her family and demanded a CID probe into the incident.

A day before her death, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde, who is Lok Sabha MP from Beed, and his daughter Pankaja Palve visited the teenager in the hospital. The incident has sparked public outrage, with a group of women throwing eggs and tomatoes at both accused when they were being produced before a local court on Friday.

The incident highlights the issue of sexual violence against women in India and the need for stricter laws and better enforcement to prevent such heinous crimes. The victim's death is a tragic loss, and justice must be served to ensure that no other woman suffers a similar fate.
