Granddaughter's friend kills 65-year-old woman for SRA money in Koparkhairane

A 26-year-old man, Rohit Devlekar, has been arrested by the local police in connection with the murder of a 65-year-old woman, Meerabai Sonawane, in Koparkhairane, Maharashtra. The victim was killed by her granddaughter's friend, Nasreen alias Annu Shaikh, who shared her room, for the Rs 1 lakh cash that the victim had received from a builder under the SRA scheme in Kurla.

The corpse of the victim was found near the Ghansoli creek in sector-20, Koparkhairane, and the cause of her death was found to be strangulation by neck as per the post mortem report. The accused Nasreen and her boyfriend Rohit Devlekar were arrested from Nerul and Sarsole village respectively. The accused Nasreen had accompanied Sonawane to the bank to withdraw the cash, and she allegedly killed her for the money, strangulating her and stealing the cash from her.

The accused Nasreen was pursuing her second year B.Sc. and worked at a massage centre to earn a living. She had two minor girls aged 2 years and 5 years. The accused Devlekar belongs to a well-to-do family as his father is employed with the railways. The accused have been arrested and booked under Sections 302, 394, 212 and 202 of the IPC. The accused has been remanded in police custody until December 10.
