## Priyadarshini Mattoo: A Case That Shook India's Justice System
Priyadarshini Mattoo was a 25-year-old law student at the University of Delhi whose tragic murder became one of India's most significant criminal cases. Bright, ambitious, and determined to build a career in law, she had repeatedly complained to the police about being stalked and harassed by Santosh Kumar Singh, a fellow law student from an influential family. Despite her complaints and police protection, the harassment continued.
On 23 January 1996, Priyadarshini was brutally raped and murdered at her uncle's residence in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. The investigation revealed evidence linking the accused to the crime, including DNA evidence and injuries consistent with a violent struggle. However, the initial trial ended in acquittal due to insufficient evidence, leading to widespread public outrage and raising serious concerns about the influence of power and the shortcomings of the justice system.
Following an appeal, the Delhi High Court overturned the acquittal in 2006 and convicted Santosh Kumar Singh, sentencing him to death. In 2010, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction but commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.
The Priyadarshini Mattoo case remains a landmark in India's legal history, symbolizing the struggle for justice and highlighting the importance of accountability, impartial investigations, and judicial reform.
