Part 1

The Inside Story

Married Woman Severely Burnt at Home in Sanjay Colony, South Delhi

A married woman, Neelam, 19, was severely burnt at her home in Sanjay Colony, South Delhi. She has received 75 percent burn injuries and was rushed to Safdarjung hospital. Neelam is married to Jaipal, 22. The incident was reported around 12 p.m. Her parents alleged her in-laws had set her on fire due to some dispute, but the police did not confirm it, saying they were yet to record the victim’s statement.

As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 7,026 dowry deaths were reported in India in 2019. The data also revealed that Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal recorded the highest number of dowry deaths in the country. Dowry deaths are a social evil in India and refer to the deaths of young women who are murdered or driven to suicide by continuous harassment and torture by husbands and in-laws over a dispute regarding dowry.

Despite a series of laws enacted to combat the menace of dowry in India, the practice continues unabated in many parts of the country. Women in India are often subjected to violence and abuse in their marital homes, and dowry deaths are one of the most brutal forms of violence against women. It is high time for the government to take strict measures to curb the practice of dowry and ensure the safety and security of women in the country.
