16-year-old Rape Victim Commits Suicide, Two Arrested After Recovery of Suicide Note
A 16-year-old girl was found hanging at her residence in Vakola, Santacruz (East) on Tuesday night. The police officials, who recovered the suicide note alongside her body, have arrested two men on charges of rape and abetment to suicide. The note detailed her ordeal as she faced sexual assault by her brother-in-law and her boyfriend. This is one of the rare cases in which a dying statement by a minor has been used to establish an offence that allegedly took place in 2012.
According to the police officials, the girl was a first-year Bachelor of Commerce student in a Vile Parle college. Her mother found the door of the house locked from inside when she returned home at 9.30 pm. After breaking the door, they found their daughter dead. The victim’s suicide note contained the names of two men who had raped her and abetted her suicide.
The girl's sister's fiancé had allegedly raped her a day before her sister's wedding in 2012. Later, the girl had a boyfriend who had raped her a few days ago and then broken off with her. The Vakola police have arrested the girl's brother-in-law and her boyfriend for raping her on different occasions and also abetting her to commit suicide.
